People who have mundane jobs and not enjoyable have at least one necessity of life taken care of: livelihood.
Regardless of how bad things might get, they won’t have to sleep on an empty stomach.

The decision that such individuals have to make, therefore, is whether to keep on looking and choosing a fulfilling career that is appealing to them, or to settle for something that provides them with basic livelihood.
Selecting a fulfilling career may not come easy, as there are so many options available to you.
And it may feel at times as if these career options are just not clear, perhaps you don’t see yourself there, or perhaps the career is so long it would take you years to get there.
Regardless of the end of the spectrum you might lie on, you are not alone.
Actually, almost two-thirds of the people would choose another career if they could.
When you think about it after taking everything into perspective, you realize that the lack of job satisfaction for our millennial generation is nothing short of an epidemic.
People often assume that people with lousy jobs are better than people with no jobs at all. After all, having basic livelihood is better than having no livelihood, right?
However, according to a survey conducted by GALLUP, this does not appear to be the case at all.
Research suggests that emotionally disconnected employees rate their lives more poorly as compared to the unemployed folks.
According to the statistics, only forty two percent of the actively disengaged workers are thriving in their individual lives.
On the other hand, when it comes to the unemployed individuals, the same percentage goes up to forty eight.
However, the biggest take away from this survey relates to the engaged employees, seventy one percent of whom are thriving.
This means that the quality of one’s life significantly improves when their works is meaningful and fulfilling.
The fact of the matter is that there are fulfilling careers out there that can not only give you livelihood but enhance the quality of life that you lead as well.
Regardless of what you might like, there are fulfilling careers out there and you need to have you head in the right place if you are to find the right one for you.
Bearing this in mind, here are some of the factors that make jobs fulfilling:
A majority of the individuals go into their jobs believing that money matters the most.
They take the first big offer that comes their way, without considering if their work will be meaningful or not.
These are the kinds of people that you often find complaining the most about jobs. Everything just goes downhill when they realize that money is not as important as they initially considered it to be.
If you think about it, the value of money ends once you are able to pay all the bills.
Ask experienced professionals about what gives them job satisfaction and they’ll rarely give money the top place on the list.
Instead, you will find these people to lay much more stress on having a meaning and purpose about their lives. A meaningful job offers a level of satisfaction unmatched by the accumulation of wealth.
People believe that being the top dog in a profession brings with it the feelings of happiness and satisfaction. However, the fact of the matter is that it is not how things work. Why?
Well, it is because it is not your status on the job that generates meaning but the respect that you are able to muster out of it.
This means that if you wish to do meaningful work, you should not be in an unending struggle for status; rather you should be focusing more on the nature and relationships of your work.
For instance, it is natural for the head of a hospital to have the highest pay; but it’s the doctors and the nurses who’ll find their job descriptions to be the most meaningful and respectful.
At times, people are so busy with the compensation that they receive for their jobs that they find themselves involved in an unending desire for status, without realizing that it is relationships that bring respect and not their status.
Have you ever wondered why the most meaningful professions are often the ones that guarantee the good of mankind? For instance, consider the example of a firefighter.
If a firefighter is able to pay the bills, there’s a high probability of him never complaining about his job.
Similarly, there is a reason why nurses love the work that they do so much; considering how they are able to directly influence the lives of numerous individuals for the better on a daily basis.
To put it in a nutshell, people who are involved in work that benefits the society often display higher levels of job satisfaction; provided that their basic necessities are taken care of.
This means that if you wish to be happy in your work, you need to find a profession that focuses on others, rather than on yourself and blind pursuit of money.
However, the question arises: what does this mean for individuals who are not at all involved in professions that benefit mankind or Mother Earth?
Is leaving their professions behind for something completely different the only mean available to them for finding meaning in life? Well, that is not at all the case!
Regardless of the walk of life you might consider, the fact is that everyone craves to be the best at everything that they do.
The same logic applies to choosing a fulfilling career as well. Doing what you have the potential to be the best at does wonders to making it meaningful. Why?
Well, it is because the pursuit for greatness appears to be in born in a majority of us.
But how do you go about doing that? After all, how are you supposed to know if you will be good at doing at a job or not? Well, the fact of the matter is that you can never be sure of whether you will like a job or not but you can be sure of your skill sets and talents.
This is why you should only pursue careers that are in line with your talent pool. Doing what you are good at increases your chances of being the top dog. This enhances the satisfaction and meaning that you get out of your employment.
It is all good to do what you are good at but the question remains: what if you do not like doing what you are good at? This is the reason why it is so important to do what you love; considering how it has numerous benefits to offer. Thus choosing a fulfilling career always comes at play.
From negative depression to lesser anxiety, pursuing what you love offers not only numerous psychological benefits. It offers a deeper sense of satisfaction and meaning as well.
However, the fact remains that things are not quite as simple as they seem. After all, if it was this easy, everybody would be doing it.
We only find a handful of individuals to be pursuing their passions; the rest are as far away from their passions as the earth is far away from the sun. People often argue that their passions are quite difficult to make a living at.
What you should know is that it is only difficult if you are not good at doing what you love. This means that if you combine your passion with hard work, you will be able to develop the required skills set for success.
To put it into a nutshell: nothing will give you more satisfaction and sense of meaning than a job utilizing your talents and passions.
Time can be your greatest friend or your worst enemy. You will either have too much time on your hands or not enough. Both scenarios pose serious questions when it comes to finding a fulfilling profession.
If you find yourself with too little time on your hands, it means that your job is too stressful. If you were good at it, you would not need to spend too much time on it on a daily basis.
On the other hand, if you find yourself with too much time on your hands, know that you could be doing so much more. Once such a thought is in your head, you will not find satisfaction at all.
This is the reason why you need to find a job where you are can lose the sense of time and space. The sign of a meaningful career is that it will engross you in such a manner that you will lose the sense of time.
For instance, take the example of a surgeon. A surgery can last for up to several hours.
Without feeling the crunch of time at all, the surgeon is focused, determined and strong. Yet the surgeon realizes the length of time that has passed once the surgery is done.
As a rule of thumb, if you feel that the time on your job passes a bit too fast, know that you have found your “higher calling”.
Regardless of whether you speak of human beings or animals, the fact is that the pursuit of autonomy is common in all species.
After all, there is nothing better than doing what you want to do, right? However, just as a lion can be tamed to perform in a circus; human beings are often conditioned to follow a certain set of orders from their superiors at work.
Bearing this in mind, you have to say that there has to be some difference between a man in an office and a lion in a circus.
This is why having autonomy on job is important, for you can follow orders on job only for so long. However, this doesn’t create room to forego the authority of your superiors at work.
What this means, instead, is that it is incredibly important for a fulfilling career to not have you asking your supervisors on every matter that you encounter, no matter how rudimentary it might be.
Autonomy is an essential requirement of growth. The more you grow, the more satisfaction you will draw from your career. Choosing a fulfilling career can be a fun adventure if you position it into a positive direction.
All of us wish to have the best possible careers, right? Well, the only way for us to have such careers is if we let go of some our expectations.
Sure it is fine and dandy to wish for a career that has everything that you have ever wanted; but the fact remains that you will never find anything in life to be perfect.

You need to understand that being on job is not like being on a bed of roses; regardless of how passionate and talented you might be. You will not find your job to always be interesting and challenging, simply because that is not what the intention of the employer is.
The employers are not there to give meaning to your life; they hire you solely because there is some work that needs to be done. It is your job to draw meaning and satisfaction from the work you were hired to do.
Surely the work environment and what you are doing play a significant role in deciding satisfaction; but the fact remains that your level of satisfaction depends a whole lot upon your appetite.
Speaking of job hunting, everything ultimately boils down to how you never really know what you are getting into beforehand.
Too many a times we see individuals disappointed by their jobs. These jobs were not what they had in mind when they were applying for them.
The basic problem with job hunting is that we don’t really know much about what we’re getting ourselves into. This means that our experience will be either better or worse than our expectations.
For instance, if a person was to become a police officer solely based on how police officers appear to work on TV shows, they will certainly be in for a big disappointment.
You certainly cannot try a different job each month and choose the one that feels like the best. The only respite you have is to get in touch with some of the professionals doing the job that you’re considering.
Tell them about your expectations and inquire if they are reasonable or not. If you feel as if the position is nothing like what you had imagined, there is a high probability of it not being emotionally fulfilling.
Such an approach will allow you to get an exposure without any formal commitment. You will be able to assess your options accordingly!
An average man spends around 80,000 hours of their lives working. Going by this statistic, it would not be wrong to suggest that career is the most important aspect of a person’s life.
